Skills:

  • Through reflection, students will make connections with how this Activity 7 ties back to the Lesson about civic engagement and how Wild Horse Annie (Velma Johnston) navigated the channels of government to stop the cruel and deadly treatment of OUR nation's wild horses and burros.
  • Students will review how Velma Johnston accomplished this (bullet point above), i.e., through the help of students across the USA who joined her 'pencil brigage' by writing letters to local, state, and federal government officials for positive, productive change!
  • Students will carry out this legacy (above bullet point) by not only participating in a 'pencil brigade' but also a 'digital brigade' by emailing their state representatives and senators, in addition to creating on-line petitions and sharing information (evidence based on facts) on other social media platforms.
  • Students will have an opportunity to express and support their opinion with fact-based reasons.
  • They will use all of their Template Books (from previous Activities) which are packed with factual evidence to EMPOWER their voices and speak up for those who can not speak for themselves (wild horses and burros)!
